Awesome questions about the social media. I think the plagiarism is related to social media. Then its boths are connected.

Great post! Plagiarism is and will always be a huge deal that must be payed attention to closely. However, phrases sometimes get repeated unintentionally. In one of my advertising classes, i was trying to use the word secret in my tagline…it only got negative feedback because everyone thinks of secret deodorant when they hear the word secret. Using the word wasn’t plagiarism, but perhaps the people at the deodorant company would think differently?

Plagerism seems to be rampent on the internet. At least give a link credit. How hard is it to say “I really liked this post - here were some points the author made - here’s my analysis?”

But then again, there are a lot of VERY similar conversations out there (sometimes my feedreader makes my head spin at how similar the posts are) and a lot of people just think a like. So I can see where the confusion can come in.

I just hope in the longrun people really are cheating themselves more by stealing.

The problem has less to do with plagiarism, and more to do–as you point out–with the fact that there is very little being said and many, many people saying it.

Anonymity means that anyone and everyone can be an expert on the internet. Rehashing others’ ideas, representing them in a new light, adding your own opinion or simply adopting someone else’s… It becomes hard to tell who is copying who.

But in the end, if you’re saying the same thing as everyone else, you’re destined to get lost in the mix (in the Mixx?) no matter what. Is it plagiarism? Who cares? Its mediocre, and therefore irrelevant.
